QUARTZ MACHINING & GRINDING

What is Quartz or Silicon DiOxide (SiO2)?

Quartz is the name given to extremely pure silicon dioxide (SIO2) crystals. Crystal Quartz stone, also known as Quartz Crystal, can be found in many areas across the globe. It is a solid and hard mineral that forms more than 10% of the earth crust. Crystals are in the shape of hexagonal prisms when taken from the ground.

Quartz is the mineral form of silica powder, and it is used in ceramic glazes, clay bodies, grog for added texture, quartz glass for instrumentation, connectors, pipes, valves, and more. It is often used to increase thermal expansion, and it is very resistant to both chemicals and heat making it a great option for many applications like optics. Optical-grade quartz crystals are used to make specialized lenses, windows and filters used in lasers, microscopes, telescopes, electronic sensors, and scientific instruments.

Quartz Machining for Ceramics

Quartz starts its journey being mined from rock and then being powderized, or being grown in laboratories using hydrothermal activity. Quartz is one of many ceramic materials widely manufactured and readily used in different industries related to quartz ceramics.

Other ceramic materials include silicon, sapphire, graphite, aluminum nitride, aluminum 6061, 998 alumina, and 995 alumina.

Quartz is used in components that require resistance to heat, corrosion, chemicals, and prevent contamination. Any parts that require precision, high-temperature resistance, or high-contamination control are great use-cases for quartz ceramics.

Common quartz items that are often machined are containers, nozzles, quartz glass parts, quartz plates, rods, oscillators, optical-sensors, optical lenses, and more. Billions of quartz crystals are being used to make oscillators for watches, clocks, radios, televisions, computers, cell phones, meters, GPS equipment, and more.
